Cool Pre Install Gitters for Acer Ferrari 3200 64 bit laptop

Hello all,

I have recently bought a new Acer Ferrari 3200, with a 2800 AMD 64 bit proc, 80 gig hard drive, 2 gigs of ram, wireless g * I don't know what chipset as of yet, because I just got it and popped the ram in today, usb2, firewire and 128mb Ati Radeon video card.

I was wondering what tweaks, install help, or just general tips I could find useful to keep from this being an all weekend adventure in installing Fedora...

I used to use SuSe, Mandrake, and RedHat on a few of my other systems, but this is my first install of linux on a laptop, so any help you can give would be apprecitated.

I'm also thinking of using VMware, or Virtual PC to run Linux in the Windows XP Pro enviroment, instead of having to dual boot.. but would like the option to use full out Fedora without the lag of Windows XP...

Thanks

Cool

I got the wireless card to work fine: what you need is the latest version of ndiswrapper, wireless tools and a copy of Winxp 64bit drivers...

http://sourceforge.net/projects/ndiswrapper/
http://www.hpl.hp.com/personal/Jean_...nux/Tools.html
http://ubuntuforums.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=186

config, make and make install ndiswrapper and wireless tools, unzip the drivers and put them somewhere sane, ( /usr/windrivers ??) then go:

ndiswrapper -i <pathto>/netbc564.inf

this installs the driver in /etc/ndiswrapper..

then

modprobe ndiswrapper

this should get the driver loaded (check dmesg for error messages)..

then start configuring your wireless with iwconfig

i.e.

iwconfig mode auto
iwconfig key sassword
iwconfig key open
iwconfig ....
..
..
iwconfig commit

now bring UP the interface with

ifconfig wlan0

now, if you want dhcp use

dhcpcd wlan0

and try it out (you may have to add it to your routing table)...

Hope this helps you guys, I had gentoo on my 3200, but had a lot of trouble ketting KDE to work. I'm trying FC3 today...

ps, for the radeon mobility card look at:

bye for now, stay in touch guys...
