Following the instructions available at
http://ipw2200.sourceforge.net/INSTALL . I had attempted to install the necessary component needed, but I met up with some slight problem.
In the install instruction, I was asked to place the firmware into /usr/lib/hotplug/firmware/ but I wasn’t able to find the directory on my installation , so i created the directory myself.
Next I try to load the driver myself using insmod ipw2200.ko, after loading the driver I was able to see it using iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions
sit0 no wireless extensions
eth0 no wireless extensions
eth1 IEEE 802.11bg Mode: Monitor
But when I attempted to set the SSID using iwconfig eth1 essid "blahblah" I get the following error message
Error for wireless request “Set ESSID” (8B1A):
SET failed on device eth1 ; Operation not supported
My kernel version is 2.6.5-1.358 (Fedora Core 2) on a i686
