ATI HD4870 - Reviews Please?

So the time has come to replace my desktop rig (current details in signature), and I've decided to splash out on the following:

- Coolermaster Cosmos S case
- Intel Core2Quad Q6600 CPU (G0 stepping) - 2.6GHz @ 1066MHz FSB
- Asus P5K-E Wifi-AP motherboard
- 2GB PC2-8500 DDR2 memory (running at 1066MHz)
- 22" HannsG monitor (HDMI - 1680x1050) - replacing one of the 17" TFTs

I've read very favourable reviews of the ATI HD4870 GPU, and I've also read claims regarding ATI's supposed change of heart on Linux support, so I'm considering buying one.

Does anyone have any practical real-world experience with running an HD4870 with Fedora (either 8 or 9)?

// Edit
Before the smart-alecs chip in, I have Googled and searched the forums but come up with not a lot as the card is pretty new, so some practical advice would be appreciated

No practical experience with the card, but from what I can tell here:

It should *work*, HOWEVER, there is no multi-GPU support available in either the open source drivers or in the binary driver, the binary driver does not work with Xorg 7.4 (which means that it would have to be downgraded in order for this driver to work with F9), and (from what I can tell), it is not yet supported by radeonhd (though it *may* work with ati, possibly requiring a patch).

Thanks

I still use Windows for graphics work (Adobe Fireworks CS3 doesn't play particularly well with WINE) and will more than likely use Windows for gaming (I only play CounterStrike: Source every so often).

My main worries with Linux are getting Compiz and the like running as well as configuring it to a pretty custom screen setup - 1680x1050 on one 22" widescreen with a secondary 17" 4:3 running at 1280x1024. I know running Compiz won't even stress the RV770 chip but it shouldn't stress my current X1600 Pro - yet I still can't get it to work!

I don't mind running Fedora 8, from experience F9 is still slightly buggy (the lack of a customisable GDM is also an extremely major annoyance) so I may wait until F10 to update the machine
