authorization questions

hi, i'm using Fedora 9 on a i386 laptop. i'm fairly new to linux and am still a little unclear about permissions and authorizations. when i put a cd or dvd in my drive and copy a file to my HD the files are listed as being owned by root. this is fine until i need to delete the files and i need to chmod them to get rid of them properly. i've tried giving myself authorization to mount the cdrom but it doesn't change anything.

also i've used gparted to format a usb HD to ext3. when i mount the drive i am denied permission to copy files to the drive. i'm assuming it is because i formatted the drive as root in gparted. how can i format it as a user using gparted.

if anyone knows of a good tutorial dealing with this aspect of linux i would be greatful for the information
thanks for your help

Hello:
From a terminal type and enter
polkit-gnome-authorization

and browse around there, and I think you should be able to correct / change your authorizations etc.

i've given myself unrestricted rights to both mounting and cdrom and i still can't copy to the drive, and files copied from the cdrom are still "locked".

any ideas?
