AVAHI Daemon Failed on startup and other startup issues. Please help !!!!

I am running Fedora core 7.0. I installed in Dec 08. Everything had been working fine until now. When booted my box up it does not bring up the X.Windows login screen and gives the following error message:
"The Greeter application appears to be crashing. Attempting to use a different one"

Also, before I get to the login screen, during the POST, when linux gives a checklist of all the items it is testing, it gives OK (in green) to everything except for AVAHI DAEMON=FAILED (in red). After that it gets to the gui login screen and it fails.

I am not sure if the AVAHI Daemon Fail issue is in anyway related to the login screen not coming up issue. When I try to ssh (putt) into the linux box from another machine within the network, i get the login prompt, i put in my username (root or any other username) and it asks for password. After I put the password in, it shuts off the ssh connection.

Can anyone please help me. I am a beginner and dont know much about linux. I had lots of every important apps running on this machine which took me ages to setup. I hope I donot have to re-install everything from scratch.

Sounds like something has gone hinky, alright.

Consider logging into single user mode and backing up all your important things.

Also take a look at the output of the 'dmesg' command, /var/log/messages, and the X log in /var/log directory.

PS : you can run :

# /etc/init.d/network start
# /etc/init.d/sshd start

...to get remote access working in single user mode. Probably makes it easier to back up your files.
