Exclamation Lag on startup, applications and internet -> eth0

Problem
When booting up Fedora 8 the system lags at starting sendmail then once again at starting cups. Then finally opens the logon screen. When you enter a password and hit enter it takes _forever_. Finally Gnome starts to load up. Everything is basically screwed up for a minute then bam its all normal. When launching an application (anything even terminal) there is a 20 second plus delay. Internet connection is very slow but only when accessing http (i.e. downloading files is still 140kb/s+, and playing multiplayer games still works just fine)

What I tried
  • Disabled sendmail (started up quickly, however logon still took forever and all other problems remain)
  • Created another account to see if it was this one. It's not just this user
  • Unplugged DSL modem <-- SOLUTION

Okay, so after I unplugged the modem it started up normally, no delays at all. No lag, perfect. Expect now I don't have a modem. After bootup, I plug the modem back in and activate eth0. No applications lag however my internet connection is still VERY slow.

System Specs
Fedora 8 (Kernel 2.6.25.9.40) x86_64
4GB Dual Channel Memory
AMD Athlon 64 x2 Dual Core Processor 6400+

Note: I've been using this system with out problems non-stop for three months. This just started today! I'm on the system right now.

Contents of /etc/hosts
Quote:
# Do not remove the following line, or various programs
# that require network functionality will fail.
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
::1 localhost.localdomain localhost
Q&A
  1. Did you install any new hardware? NO
  2. Whats the temp? 44 DEGREES ACROSS THE BOARD

How can I fix this?

That didn't seem to do anything. Though I may have not done it correctly. I'm pretty new to Linux

Also an interesting thing. The system and all applications only lag when eth0 is enabled.

You should set the hostname using system-config-network, and save the result.
Also add you system's name & IP to /etc/hosts if you aren't on a DNS server.

The "slowness" is mostly causes by the the system trying to resolve an address or name using the network ... if the system name and a few other things aren't resolvable it waits for timeouts and that can take a minute or more.

Yes it makes sense that w/ eth0 down then things are fast - the request fails immediately - no timeout delay.

Steve,

I set my hostname using system-config-network and saved then rebooted. It change the hostname in system-config-network. However nothing changed in /etc/hosts it still says "127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost" and "::1 localhost.localdomain localhost"

Which bit would I change? My hostname is "xplutus" also I'm on DSL and my IP changes every few days. So, adding my IP isn't really an option. It grabs all that using DHCP.

If you are using ethernet cable, not wireless, rather turn off NetworkManager service and use system-config-network & network service?

What are you doing w/ the interne that seems slow ?

I assume it's browsing.

Try the nslookup command for severa lwebsites yo haven't accessed rcently.
nslookup google.com
nslookup finanace.yahoo.com
If the command doesn't print results instantly then the problem is your DNS server setup. So post the contents of the file /etc/resolv.conf .

If it does come back quicky, then try pinging one of the slow websites using the IP address address printed by nslookup. Like:
Quote:
# nslookup google.com
Server: 192.168.0.1
Address: 192.168.0.1#53

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: google.com
Address: 72.14.207.99
Name: google.com
Address: 64.233.187.99

[stevea@nidula ~]# ping 72.14.207.99

4 packets transmitted, 4 received, 0% packet loss, time 3002ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 44.707/50.121/57.611/4.691 ms
If the time on the ping is much over 100ms (mine is around 50ms)
then your conneection has some issues.

I was getting similar messages when trying to run a security update this morning on Fedora 8 x86_64 (can't remember the kernel #, but I believe it's the most recent). In fact I was unable to complete the update until I deselected the three instances of NetworkManager updates. Haven't tried a reboot since (and won't get a chance until tonight). Presumably (or rather hopefully), I won't run into any problems since NetworkManager was not updated
