I use my laptop's builtin winmodem that is based on the intel 537 chipset. It works well with the Smart Link Linux driver, and its sometimes faster than on Windows. Mighty cool, if you ask me.

You do not want a modem that uses software drivers ...these will not work with linux till someone ports over the drivers...I believe there is a project to do this but nothing stable yet.

I think there is a problem with this question, because you have to say, that you want to buy it in a small village on a little island somewhere in the ocean So links from the continent won't help you, I suppose. So maybe it's better to ask in your neighbourhood or your LUG, where there is a good computer shop near you or which homepage sales good modems.

Modem issue

Hi,

Your best bet is to look at the chipsets that are supported in Linux. This is pretty much the best way to actually find the infomation you want pertaining to all hardware that is supported in Linux. Don't go by the manufactures name, but rather by the chipset they use in there product

James
