Xorg &| driver updates breaks Fedora graphics

Intel chips are not well supported on Fedora 9 and updates, applied today make things worse.

I have just updated two computers, both using intel chips, which are supposedly supported by the intel driver for X. On both machines (an x86 and an x86_64) X simply doesn't start up -- the symptoms are RHGB not starting and GDM erstarting all the time. On the x86 machine the VESA drivers work, with worse support than before the updates -- the supported resolutions are now 800x600 and 640x480, while it had support for 1024x768 before the updates. The x86_64 has the same symptoms using the VESA drivers as using the Intel drivers.

Be carefull when updating to the newest X and drivers.

Don't use gdm, switch to kdm. To do that, create the /etc/sysconfig/desktop file.
Code:
[root@kiriyamablevins ~]# cat /etc/sysconfig/desktop
DESKTOP="KDE"
DISPLAYMANAGER="KDE"
[root@kiriyamablevins ~]#
Then give a list of rest of the issue, deal one issue at a time.

KDE4 is bad, especially when comparing with KDE3..
konsole of KDE3 is full customizable, while konsole of KDE4 not.

So I have to give up my 5 years KDE experience, and turn to GNOME, even I dislike GNOME either.

This has nothing to do with GDM, so please, don't make it about GDM.

It may just be the two computers I have used that has issues -- neither use a GMA 950, and given that they show different symptoms, I'm not surpriced people aren't experiencing the same results using different chips.

I am not too sure about the x86_64 machine (and the motherboard has died since my last post, so I can't check) but the x86 machine has an i815.
