xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-96xx conflicts with xorg-x11-drv-nvidia
Hi folks,
I have been reading a lot and trying many different commands to resolve a "nvidia.ko for kernel 2.6.25.9-76.fc9.i686 not found" after I did an upgrade from F7 to F9. Originally I had an x window to put my login and pw but never got further than that.
Now with the nvidia-96xx drv disabled and an xorg.conf file that I have manipulated or better put --mutilated--, I am not sure what to do.
Right now I am trying to yum install or update kmod-nvidia with processing Conflicts ending in ERROR: xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-96xx conflicts with xorg-x11-drv-nvidia
What gives here?
Thanks

Your card is unsupported in F9 as nvidia haven't released a driver that supports the xorg server used in F9 !

for the old legacy drivers ( i have an old mx400 card)you will need to DOWNGRADE xorg. The legacy nvidia drivers are not supported for the NEW xorg
did you do the NOT RECOMMENDED upgrade or a fresh install
--- or ---
install fedora 8 until you buy a new nvidia card , or in my case new card, motherboard, and new hard drives ... new box this one is 7 going on 8 years old

Wait a second...mx 440 is old now? What happened? What century am I in?
Any idea when my card might be supported? Like in the next couple of days?
No Gaming here though I need my Google maps. Not sure how demanding that is...
The NOT RECOMMENDED upgrade fell upon me and I had to commit and follow through. More imposed experience added to my agenda, don't really have the time so I am using the forum advise--thanks again!
I would much rather get an acceptable graphics card-I will look at Hlingler's chipset list in the forum linked. I hope you are not suggesting I will have to change my motherboard as well. Is there a list of recommended hardware to Linux software that is an easy read?
I have many, many p3 & p4 machines with older hardware. I wonder what the best OS would be.
Sounds like I need to do a fresh install of fedora 8 and that may be the the last "upgrade" for my machine unless I "upgrade" my parts. One purpose to the 7 to 9 'upgrade' was to avoid the cd burn since I have none. Can I do fedora 8 'live' or what is a way to do the install?
I appreciate any and all feedback. Thanks for the quick replies.

Holy crap,
the chipsets that come out today are amazing...I will have to stick with what works best in a AGP 1.5v 4x slot. Any inexpensive suggestions?
All I need to do is to invent a reasonable and inexpensive way to disperse heat and I will have no worries--I'm working on it.
Interesting that Intel lists my mobo as not supporting Linux.
The nvnews is great, as it raises more questions for me, I will refrain
Again, I appreciate all the information!
Thank you

Am I to worry about xorg in F9 even if my card is supported? I am not sure I understand.
Thanks,
Newbie

NVIDIA GeForce 6600 is fully supported by both F9 and the latest NVidia driver (REV. 173.14.09). Snag that card if you can afford it and install it, and your problems will (hopefully) disappear.

Will be waiting on the ship of my card and then I will be back to start another thread, if need be, after I look at all the other helpful threads.
Thanks for everyone's time and help. Much appreciated!!

I will start a new thread, as I am not sure if this will still give me reply.
I have my new card installed. The only screen I get is GRUB. Never had this before and I do not know how to deal with it. What is my next course of action?
Thanks!

Yeah, I think you probably should start a new thread on the boot problem, since it appears to be unrelated to the driver. I do not see how the new vid card or driver issues could cause a failure to even get past GRUB. Sounds like a GRUB problem to me. Did you recently update GRUB ?
