cant empty trash

hi all,

i tried to empty the trash on the desktop, but got permission denied. tried to empty in command line with
rm -rf /home/USER/trash/* (with su rights), but it doesn't work either, nothing happens. where can i find the folder for trash in a shell? how can i empty it?

It used to be /home/USER/.Trash

In Fedora 9 gnome it seems to be /home/USER/.local/share/Trash
