F9 GDM downgrade guide.

If you don't like the new GDM version in F9 try downgrading to the F8 GDM !


To downgrade

su
rpm -e gdm gdm-user-switch-applet fedorainfinity-gdm-theme
yum install wget
wget http://www.linux-ati-drivers.homecall.co.uk/fedora-8-gdm.repo -O /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora-8-gdm.repo
cp /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora.repo /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora.repo.old
cp /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora-updates.repo /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora-updates.repo.old
cp /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora-updates-newkey.repo /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora-updates-newkey.repo.old
perl -i -pe "s/(\[.*\])/\1\nexclude=gdm gdm-user-switch-applet/"  /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora.repo
perl -i -pe "s/(\[.*\])/\1\nexclude=gdm gdm-user-switch-applet/" /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora-updates.repo
perl -i -pe "s/(\[.*\])/\1\nexclude=gdm gdm-user-switch-applet/" /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora-updates-newkey.repo
yum clean all
yum install gdm gdm-extra-faces fast-user-switch-applet

Reboot


To reverse it

su
rm -f /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora-8-gdm.repo
cp /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora.repo.old /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora.repo
cp /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora-updates.repo.old /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora-updates.repo
cp /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora-updates-newkey.repo.old /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora-updates-newkey.repo 
yum clean all
yum update

hmm.. it didn't seem to work for me. The fc9 packages are still showing up for me. Does it matter that I downgraded the xorg server to get the fglrx driver working from your other how to?

Check to make sure the repo's were edited with this line


exclude=gdm gdm-user-switch-applet

1. /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora.repo
2. /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora-updates.repo

perl -i -pe "s/(\[.*\])/\1\nexclude=gdm gdm-user-switch-applet/"  /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora.repo
perl -i -pe "s/(\[.*\])/\1\nexclude=gdm gdm-user-switch-applet/" /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora-updates.repo

Yeah, they were both edited with that line, but apparently the pre-existing exclude line from your other tutorial interfered with yum. Yum only listened to the ati one: exclude=xorg* linuxwacom* rhpxl* mesa* from your other howto. Combining the two worked perfectly. Thanks for the help and another fantastic howto.

Any idea when this will not be needed? AKA when the Fedora 9 GDM will be complete?

perl -i -pe "s/(\[.*\])/\1\nexclude=gdm gdm-user-switch-applet/" /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora-updates.repo
yum clean all

and remove the fedorainfinity-gdm-theme from the second line because for some reason a default Fedora 9 installation (liveCD) doesn't have either wget or fedorainfinity-gdm-theme installed.
