problem in adding new sound card by replacing on board

hello,
i am new to fedora, i have installed fedora 9, my system is Intel845gvsr and 2.4 Ghz processor. my sound card seems to be problem it stops suddenly. i found that i have to replace it with new one, so brought new sound card and placed it in extension slot. after i starting the system it is showing some error while booting and after booting it is not displaying any sound device. please help me

You had a onboard sound card? Need to disable it in BIOS first?

What is the model of the soundcard? Put it in another pci slot?

i have changed my sound card to tech-com ssd-ess-4ch now it is showing the hard ware and all the volumes are set to high but no sound is coming plz help me quickly

thank you very much marcrblevins sir, now my system is playing sound. the new sound card is working fine after i changed to new pci slot. but the old one is not working even after changing pci slot.
what i lern is yamaha 724 is not supported in linux. thank you very much for your help once agin .

one more last thing is alsa and oss will install by default in fedora 9 . please explain some thing
