how do I setup my xwindows?

hi,

my lspci says
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV4 [RIVA TNT] (rev 04)

I'm on FC9

how do I configure my xwindows? Right now I'm just getting a generic driver that only goes to 640x480 or 800x600

I installed via text mode but I assume whenever I want to use X I can just do startx? Do I need to do a yum update on any of the x stuff?

thx

edit: I updated my X stuff but still would like to know how to config the rest

PHP Code:
# yum update xorg-x11*
Loaded pluginsrefresh-packagekit
fedora
2.4 kB     00:00
updates                                                         2.3 kB 00

Can you provide some ore clarification? Do you mean that you always boot to the text mode(level 3)? Is this why you need to type startX when you want to use the X server? If this's your problem, you should edit the /etc/inittab file to make sure that the default level(usually the last line in the file) points to level 5, not 3. The modified line should read:
Code:
id:5:initdefault:

nah, here's what I was missing, found it in another post

Code:
rpm -ivh http://rpm.livna.org/livna-release-9.rpm

yum install kmod-nvidia xorg-x11-drv-nvidia xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-lib

/usr/sbin/nvidia-config-display enable

service nvidia restart

That's very interesting. I also have an old NV(4/5) Riva TNT2 M64 AGP card, and I tried the new nvidia driver - and it failed, because those old cards supposedly require the 71xx series legacy driver, which has not (yet) been upgraded to work with F9's X11/Xorg. So, the 71xx series driver is in fact equally useless.

I would be most curious to know if it actually works - even just to give 2D rendering.

Livna has varieties of nvidia display drivers, even for old cards. Check their repository for an appropriate package for your card. You may also find this link useful: http://www.firewing1.com/content/view/42/36/

Yes, the legacy nvidia 71xx series drivers are available - but since they have not been upgraded by nvidia to be compatible with kernel-2.6.25+ and X11/Xorg > 7.4/1.5, they don't work. Not for me, anyhow.
