Fedora Core 1, IBM Thinkpad T41p and middle mouse button on touchpad

I've been trying to make the middle mouse button work on the touchpad. The FC1 installation procedure decides that the mouse is a generic PS/2 3-button mouse. However, the third button does not do anything. Selecting 'emulate 3-buttons' does nothing to help the situation either.

I have read on another forum that it is possible to disable the touchpad in order to get a working third button, but this is not an option. Does anyone have any idea how I can get third-button functionality while keeping use of the touchpad?
