When I attempt to start gedit from the terminal when I am already ROOT I get the 'not authorized' window.Gedit still opens only in user mode. When I try to cd to /sbins/alternatives/ I get 'no such fiile'.
There is a file showing in /sbins/ for /alternatives/ when I run ls /sbins/. Root password works in all applications just not in command line or gedit. I finally ran my commands as user $ su (command) and then entered root password which it gladly accepted! New install of fc9 with all updates. Everything else seems to be working. I ran into this trying to install 'jre' using alternatives in case firefox went nuts with the plugin which it did not. I finally just did a separate install and removed the jdk pluging entirely as I could not access /alternatives/. Since everything is working at present I don't need gedit or much of the command line but kind of worrisome anyhow. Anly ideas what broke and if it can be fixed?
