Fresh Install - What next.

Hello All,

I have just completed an install of Fedora Core 2, and via this forum fixed my pppd up2date issue

I was wondering if there was any core applications (apt-rpm/synaptic?) that I should install. I would like to do the following...

Browsing - Firefox
Email - Evolution
DTP - ???
Office - OOo
Photo Management - ???

...and with more to follow I'm sure.

Any pointers would be great

Jez.

Evolution is already installed, as is Open Office.org.

For the others you'll want to look at the FedoraFAQ for some pointers. (i.e. how to set up Yum, and which repositories to use).

Have fun!

For photo managment, the base Fedora includes gtkam, the "Digital Camera Tool" and it's underlying library gphoto2.

See DAG for Firefox.

For desktop publishing, try "Scribus" - I haven't actually used it, but I've kept my eye on it. It's quite impressive. You can also use OpenOffice for DTP uses, if you don't want to get too fancy. And one must always have GIMP!

Ive used Scribus, and had an article I wrote about it slashdotted. You can read the article here.

As for photo management, GIMP isn't really going to help you there. It will however help you with photo manipulation.

You might be interested in the Linux to Windows conversion list. It helps provide a good idea of what applications are available when you migrate to Linux. You can read it here.
