Customising desktop for multiple installs

I'm currently using kickstart scripts to manage installing F8 on all desktops in my organisation, but what I would like to do is customise the desktop to add new launchers to the top panel and modify the default behaviour of the file browser and have these settings automatically applied to new machines. I tried manually setting up one machine with the correct settings and copying the .gconf directory to the /etc/skel directory but this didn't seem to work very well. Am I using the right approach or is there a simpler method of achieving the desired outcome.

Cheers
Matt
