I am using Fedora 8 and recently it has started automatically mounting everything twice so i have two icons for everything on on my desktop such as hard drives

Hello:
Others have had this issue as well with ghost mounts on the desktop from what I recall. Unfortunately I cannot recall / find if there was a fix or not, so just a few suggestions.
Does restarting your Xserver solve the issue, if not try using gconf-editor and under
/apps
/nautilus
/desktop
deselect volumes_visible
then
reselect it
and see if it helps

nope still there all that did was moved their position on the desktop
