I'm experiencing the same problem here. I am using a mobile sis graphics card in my (old) laptop. I think it's because of the new X.org... The colours are very strange and the screen flickers.
Does anyone know how to fix this? vesa also does not work well, the colours are correct, but the screen still flickers sometimes.

You could try reading: man sis
to see if there are any options to put into the xorg.conf file that might help. It looks like there might be some....

I tried all of the possible options mentioned in the man page in various combinations. But nothing helps...

And of course you re-started the X-server (or re-booted the PC) after every change? What (if anything) does /var/log/Xorg.0.log say? No warnings nor errors? How did you set up the display/xorg.conf?

it seems there is no solution to this problem. i have tried EVERYTHING but the problemi still persists. i can't find a driver for sis cards anywhere except those included with xorg, that have this bug. also the updates didn't resolv this bug so i must definitively switch to another distro. bye.

There are no errors in the Xorg.0.log, it just says that SIS driver is loaded and works...

If you would like to pursue this, please attach a copy of that log here, and your xorg.conf too.

Ok, the problem has magically gone. I switched back from vesa to sis drivers (with no additional xorg.conf options) to produce a clean Xorg.0.log and after rebooting the system, everything was nice. Even after two more reboots. Very strange...
Here is my xorg.conf as system-config-display produced it:
Code:
Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "single head configuration"
Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"
EndSection
Section "InputDevice"
# keyboard added by rhpxl
Identifier "Keyboard0"
Driver "kbd"
Option "XkbModel" "pc105"
Option "XkbLayout" "de"
Option "XkbVariant" "nodeadkeys"
EndSection
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Monitor0"
ModelName "LCD Panel 1280x800"
HorizSync 31.5 - 50.0
VertRefresh 56.0 - 65.0
Option "dpms"
EndSection
Section "Device"
Identifier "Videocard0"
Driver "sis"
EndSection
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen0"
Device "Videocard0"
Monitor "Monitor0"
DefaultDepth 24
SubSection "Display"
Viewport 0 0
Depth 24
EndSubSection
EndSection
I hope it will work forever now...
Thanks for your help anyway!

I had also had the problem with the black screen sometimes, simply hit Crtl+F1 and then Crtl+F7. I think it's a problem with the new gdm and the new Xorg...
I have to say that Fedora 9 is the worst release of Fedora I've ever installed. I have also problems with sound/PulseAudio: I just tried to play a YouTube video and there was no sound. The Pulse Audio Volume Control is unusable, because the contents of the "Playback"-tab flickers (and thats no problem with graphics). I didn't have any problems with Fedora 8; that just worked...
And another problem: Firefox and Thunderbird are really slow. Thunderbird freezes for about 10 seconds when I open a message, Firefox hangs while loadings websites sometimes.
Working with Fedora 9 is no fun. Maybe I should have waited some time before installing the new release... I hope there will be fixes soon.
