Neverball and Super TuxKart

Hi There,

I get no sound when playing Neverball and Super TuxKart. I have a 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller.

Any ideas?

Thanks

(moved to Gamers Lounge) I'd check /var/log/messages for anything unusual when booting. In my case, the sound test works every time but for some reason I keep having to add PulseRT into my groups with 'system-config-users'. That works for awhile and then, again for no reason, sound does not work on my games until I uncheck PulseRT! I filed a bugzilla but they were stumped too. Just one of those things.....

Hi there

I added pulse to my user group and got sound from neverball for 2 seconds and pulse has these log entrys:

Code:
May 10 16:50:43 localhost pulseaudio[2890]: pid.c: Stale PID file, overwriting.
May 10 16:50:43 localhost pulseaudio[2890]: alsa-util.c: Cannot find mixer control "Master".
May 10 16:50:43 localhost pulseaudio[2890]: alsa-util.c: Cannot find fallback mixer control "PCM".
does this mean anything?

I'd look for alsa-utils by "locate alsa-utils" and you should find entries:
/usr/lib/pulse-0.9/modules/libalsa-util.so
/usr/share/doc/alsa-utils-1.0.15
/usr/share/doc/alsa-utils-1.0.15/COPYING
/usr/share/doc/alsa-utils-1.0.15/ChangeLog
/usr/share/doc/alsa-utils-1.0.15/README
/usr/share/doc/alsa-utils-1.0.15/TODO
/usr/share/locale/ja/LC_MESSAGES/alsa-utils.mo

If not, you can add them through yum (yum install alsa-utils).

Also try "alsamixer" which should give you the 'master' that neverball is complaining about.

also see if you have the needed pulse audio code installed
the output of
Code:
 rpm -qa | grep pulse
will give you a list
compare it to
gstreamer-plugins-pulse-0.9.5-0.4.svn20070924.fc8
pulseaudio-core-libs-0.9.8-5.fc8
akode-pulseaudio-2.0.2-4.fc8
pulseaudio-module-zeroconf-0.9.8-5.fc8
pulseaudio-libs-0.9.8-5.fc8
pulseaudio-libs-glib2-0.9.8-5.fc8

pulseaudio-esound-compat-0.9.8-5.fc8
pulseaudio-utils-0.9.8-5.fc8
pulseaudio-module-x11-0.9.8-5.fc8
kde-settings-pulseaudio-3.5-38.fc8
alsa-plugins-pulseaudio-1.0.15-3.fc8.1
pulseaudio-0.9.8-5.fc8
pulseaudio-module-gconf-0.9.8-5.fc8
pulseaudio-libs-zeroconf-0.9.8-5.fc8
not ALL will be needed but alsa-plugins-pulseaudio-1.0.15-3.fc8.1

Different messages

hi there I now get these in the log for pulseaudio

Code:
May 12 17:24:01 localhost pulseaudio[2939]: polkit.c: Failed to show grant dialog: Unable to lookup exe for caller
May 12 17:24:01 localhost pulseaudio[2939]: polkit.c: PolicyKit responded with 'auth_admin_keep_always'
May 12 17:24:01 localhost pulseaudio[2939]: main.c: Called SUID root and real-time/high-priority scheduling was requested in the configuration. However, we lack the necessary priviliges:
May 12 17:24:01 localhost pulseaudio[2939]: main.c: We are not in group 'pulse-rt' and PolicyKit refuse to grant us priviliges. Dropping SUID again.
May 12 17:24:01 localhost pulseaudio[2939]: main.c: For enabling real-time scheduling please acquire the appropriate PolicyKit priviliges, or become a member of 'pulse-rt', or increase the RLIMIT_NICE/RLIMIT_RTPRIO resource limits for this user.
May 12 17:24:01 localhost pulseaudio[2939]: pid.c: Stale PID file, overwriting.
May 12 17:24:01 localhost pulseaudio[2939]: main.c: setrlimit(RLIMIT_NICE, (31, 31)) failed: Operation not permitted
May 12 17:24:01 localhost pulseaudio[2939]: main.c: setrlimit(RLIMIT_RTPRIO, (9, 9)) failed: Operation not permitted
I can see that there are some permission problems?

You have an identical match to my problem with games/sound. Here's mine from March:
Quote:
Mar 16 22:45:36 localhost pulseaudio[2428]: polkit.c: Failed to show grant dialog: Unable to lookup exe for caller
Mar 16 22:45:36 localhost pulseaudio[2428]: polkit.c: PolicyKit responded with 'auth_admin_keep_always'
Mar 16 22:45:36 localhost pulseaudio[2428]: main.c: Called SUID root and real-time/high-priority scheduling was requested in the configuration.
However, we lack the necessary priviliges:
Mar 16 22:45:36 localhost pulseaudio[2428]: main.c: We are not in group 'pulse-rt' and PolicyKit refuse to grant us priviliges. Dropping SUID a
gain.
Mar 16 22:45:36 localhost pulseaudio[2428]: main.c: For enabling real-time scheduling please acquire the appropriate PolicyKit priviliges, or b
ecome a member of 'pulse-rt', or increase the RLIMIT_NICE/RLIMIT_RTPRIO resource limits for this user.
Mar 16 22:45:36 localhost pulseaudio[2428]: pid.c: Daemon already running.
Check that (as su) you've added pulse-rt to your group under 'system-config-users'. Click on your username, select 'properties' and then 'groups' and add it, if not there. Then log out and back in to take effect. BTW, if this works, write "system-config-users" down, because you're periodically going to need to check and uncheck that pulse-rt occasionally as the sound fails. Funny thing is that the failures did not coincide with any updates, just the whim of the machine.
