Tried Fedora 8 for starters - LONG PAUSE when hits /sbin/loader
goes all the way to end of the install where it loads the boot stuff and gives error
"No kernel packages were installed on your system. Your boot loader configuration will not be changed"
UMMM there isnt a configuration if this is your first install
NEXT: Tried Fedora 9 Beta
The issue with the long pause in the beginning of the install is gone but during the install somewhere during the file transfer and installation it shuts off (poor attention span when looking for the exact file/package). Tried several times with same exact results.
NEXT: Tried CentOS
same as Fedora 8
these were the BIOS options, some were configurable some were not.
Did some googeling and found:Code:Latitude D830 – BIOS version A10 (02/28/2008) System System Info Processor Info Memory Info Device Info Battery info Battery Health Date/Time Boot Sequence Onboard devices Intergrated NIC Internal Modem External USB ports Parallel Port Serial Port PC Card and 1394 SATA Operation Module Bay Device Flash Cache Module ASF Mode Microphone Video Ambient Light Sensor Brightness Brightness (AC) Primary Video Security Admin Password System Password Internal HDD PW Password Change Password Bypass Wireless Switch Change Wi-Fi Catcher Change CPU XD Support TPM Security TPM Activation Computrace ® Performance Multi Core Support Dynamic Acceleration HDD Acoustic Mode SpeedStep ENable Power Management Auto On Mode Auto On Time USB Wake Support Wake on LAN/WLAN Maintenance Load Defaults Service Tag Docking Dock Device Info Undocking Method PCI Slot Monitoring Universal Connect POST Behavior Adapter Warnings Fn Key Emulation Fast Boot Virtualization Keypad (Embedded) Mouse/Touchpad Numlock LED USB Emulation Wireless Internal Bluetooth Internal Wi-Fi Internal Cellular Wireless Switch Wi-Fi Catcher
once you boot off the CD you hit the escape command which brings you to the command prompt and enter
which helps solve the issue with the /sbin/loader long pauseCode:linux acpi=off apm=off
during the install process you hit with the Grub configuration you have two options
1. MBR
2. First Sector
you will want to install it on the First Sector
Now have not done any playing the laptop to see if there were any other issues BUT at least for starters I got it through the initial install.
