Won't boot after updates

I did the recent updates which I believe included kernal update. The first boot after updates I no longer have keyboard or mouse function. How do I rescue my system?

The updater leaves the previous kernel available via the grub menu.

When you see the grub menu during the boot sequence, hit the space key, then use the arrow key to pick the other kernel.

After successfully booting the older kernel, edit the /etc/grub.conf file and change the default boot kernel...change it to default=1 for example.

You have to be root to edit the file.

Thanks for your reply. I'm unable to get into any type of work enviroment. It boots to a
localhost.localdomain login screen with users:
But I'm unable to use the keyboard or mouse for any command or login. The computer just freezes at this point. This is the case with either of
2.6.25-8.fc9.686
2.6.25-1.fc9.686
Are there any other solutions?

This won't completely solve the problem, but it'll get you to a terminal:

1. At the grub menu hit the spacebar
2. Highlight one of the kernels, press 'a'
3. You should be able to edit the line of text that is displayed, add a space and a 3 to the end of that line
4. Press enter.

This boots you into runlevel 3, which is text based, you should have a text login now, and you can type startx to open gnome/kde

That definately got me further, but I don't know what I need to edit to fix the problem. With your post I was able to text login and startx. When my desktop loads I still have no keyboard or mouse function. The desktop has a blank panel at the top of the screen and there is no panel at the bottom of the screen. Has anyone any idea what I need to edit?

I'm definitely not an expert, but here's what I'd try from there:

Have you tried startx as root or another user? If that works it would indicate that there's a problem with your profile. Beyond that I don't really know what to tell you. I'm learning too and trying to help out where I can, so I hope that at least gets you started. Good luck!

Hello:
Try booting by removing the rhgb quiet from your kernel's boot line in grub and see if that gets you any further.

Nope. It still hangs at a localhost.localdomain users login screen. Should I give it up and install something new?

Hello:
You should file a bug https://bugzilla.redhat.com/enter_bug.cgi
and initially at least include a copy of your dmesg and Xorg.0.log

Both can be found under /var/log/
