Network doesn't work...... at all.

Hi guys.

Can't seem to get any kind of network connection up and working for the internet. My Realtek ethernet card is identified perfectly. My network settings (DNS, static IP etc) have been configured and saved successfully.

The network says that it will use eth0 which is where my ethernet card is. Every time I leave the network configuration settings it says I have to reboot or restart network services. I have tried both and also tried ticking "use network manager" and everytime I switch on the card is not activated, but still fully configured. Obviously I have to restart network services when I recheck the activate box, but then when I go back in, the box is unticked.

How do I get my machine on to the internet, dudes? This is driving me nuts. I know F9 is the razor wound of bleeding edge but I'm sure they could get the networking right by this stage (mind you, sound ain't working either.....Intel HDA).

I've even tried configuration from the command line and get the same problem. If I can get on the net I'll start testing some other bits but I need this very, very basic function first.

Hope to hear from someone soon, goodnight.

Moonshinerat, I hope that someone has a 'quick and easy' solution for you, but if not, please file a bugzilla today on the issue.

Post the error you are receiving when you try to activate the card. Also verify under system-config-network that the box "allow users to enable/disable devices" is checked.

Morning folks.

I don't get an error, the card activates but I have to restart network services or the machine when I exit configuration. Either way (restart or not) I can't connect to the internet (no connection) and then network connection icon on Gnome still shows an X. The "allow users....." has been ticked since I installed.

I've got a problem with sound at the moment and regularly get obvious errors with sound, but when the machine thinks it's working properly (with networking) but won't perform as it should (without errors) I just don't know where to start looking for a solution. Really, networking and internet connections should be one of those things that works 100% of the time now on Linux, though I understand the difficulties with manufacturers that won't give up their precious 'Windows' orientated code....... but this is an Intel/Realtek based card.

Okay guys, I'm so stupid I shouldn't be allowed to use a computer..... not even Windows. My network connection has started working (not sure what I changed). But also my connection may have worked before and I didn't know. The problem is Firefox 3, not my connection. I can't get the thing out of offline mode. I've unchecked the 'Work Offline' box four times and on each restart the box is checked again.

I've installed FF2 and hey presto!

Please don't let me post again until I am clever enough to stand up on my own.......

Sorry, still got problems and they're getting more complicated.

1: After resetting my machine the network has deactivated again.
2: With Firefox 2 my package updater can't access the internet.
3. Although the package updater will access with FF3 installed, it won't access until FF3 has been opened and the "work offline" option unchecked.
4. Probably nothing to do with the network but page scrolling in FF3 is painful, it's like it's running on a 1mb S64 Trio graphics card. Even IE7 in Vista running a DVD at the same time is smooth compared to this.
5. I've noticed the Ubuntu guys have had the same problem with the network, they can't make up their mind if it is Firefox or something else. The bug has been on their lists for six weeks without resolve.

So if anybody out their has any suggestions let me know and I will try them. Just to let you know, I am just trying to get the internet connection running properly first. I have a TP Link router with my IP address assigned statically. No other computers are connected to the router. I have a generic Intel/Realtek ethernet interface built onto my motherboard which has worked since RedHat 7.1

Look forward to hearing from someone soon. If there doesn't appear to be a fix yet I'll post on a bug report.
