When playing a DVD, the DVD stutters.
Hi,
I've recently installed F8 on my laptop. I didn't run into any bumps. But after I completed the installation, with all the desired programs/drivers etc. I tried to play a DVD. But sound and video stutter constantly. I've tried Xine, VLC and SMPlayer but all have the same problem. I installed the following software to play my DVD's:
Code:
yum -y install xine xine-lib xine-skins xine-lib-extras-nonfree libdvdcss
This is software I use on all my F8 installed configurations, and with no problems. On those other configations, both pc's and laptops, I don't have any problems playing DVD's.
I get the impression that it has something to do with my hardware, as it stutters under different players. Any help in solving this problem, would greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance...

I'm sure Cardassian technology sucks
Anyway, try using mplayer from the the terminal, so you can see error messages (VLC too has a messages window, but I'm more comfortable with mplayer)
Use
Code:
mplayer -vo xv -ao alsa
Did you already check that DMA is enabled for your optical drive?

Hi just thought but when i had that problem it was due to lack of memory, which i didnt get in f7, maybe f8 uses more memory, anyway try playing the video/media on a smaller size, if it plays ok then it could possibly be memory.

Thanks for your reply.
But that makes no difference. I haven't tried F7 on this laptop, so I wouldn't know If the problem would occur with F7. Memory should be enough I think, 1GB.

This should give you something like
Code:
/dev/sr0:
Model=Optiarc DVD RW AD-7203A , FwRev=1.00 , SerialNo=
Config={ Fixed Removeable DTR<=5Mbs DTR>10Mbs nonMagnetic }
RawCHS=0/0/0, TrkSize=0, SectSize=0, ECCbytes=0
BuffType=unknown, BuffSize=0kB, MaxMultSect=0
(maybe): CurCHS=0/0/0, CurSects=0, LBA=yes, LBAsects=0
IORDY=yes, tPIO={min:120,w/IORDY:120}, tDMA={min:120,rec:120}
PIO modes: pio0 pio1 pio2 pio3 pio4
DMA modes: mdma0 mdma1 mdma2
UDMA modes: udma0 udma1 udma2 udma3 *udma4
AdvancedPM=no
* signifies the current active mode

This what I get with hdparm -i /dev/sr0:
Code:
/dev/sr0:
Model=MAT****ADVD-RAM UJ-845S , FwRev=D200 , SerialNo=
Config={ Fixed Removeable DTR<=5Mbs DTR>10Mbs nonMagnetic }

BuffType=unknown, BuffSize=0kB, MaxMultSect=0
(maybe): CurCHS=0/0/0, CurSects=0, LBA=yes, LBAsects=0
IORDY=on/off, tPIO={min:240,w/IORDY:120}, tDMA={min:120,rec:120}
PIO modes: pio0 pio1 pio2 pio3 pio4
DMA modes: sdma0 sdma1 sdma2 mdma0 mdma1 mdma2
UDMA modes: udma0 udma1 *udma2
AdvancedPM=no
Drive conforms to: Unspecified: ATA/ATAPI-3,4,5,6
* signifies the current active mode
Does this mean DMA is enabled or disabled?

It is enabled. Notice the * near udma2.
And since xv and alsa both work, I'm out of ideas... sorry

Talking of ALSA. I've got mplayer configured for Pulseaudio. Could that have something to do with it?

It's worth a try.
But I noticed this in your post above:
Code:
gmplayer -vo xv -ao alsa
...
Playing dvd://1.
number of audio channels on disk: 0.
...
MPEG: No audio stream found -> no sound.
Are you playing a DVD without audio tracks? The video playback was good?
Try mplayer (not gmplayer) from a terminal using a dvd with audio, for instance:
Code:
mplayer -vo xv -ao alsa dvd://1

Well to be honest, I don't play my DVD's using MPlayer, but I use Xine instead. MPlayer is something I use for other media-files, and I configured MPlayer with Pulseaudio. I used the command gmplayer -vo xv -ao alsa, because you suggested it. And I've also tried gmplayer -vo xv -ao pulse. As you can see here:
Code:
gmplayer -vo xv -ao pulse
MPlayer 1.0rc2-4.1.2 (C) 2000-2007 MPlayer Team

**** Your system is too SLOW to play this! ****
************************************************
Possible reasons, problems, workarounds:
- Most common: broken/buggy _audio_ driver
- Try -ao sdl or use the OSS emulation of ALSA.
- Experiment with different values for -autosync, 30 is a good start.
- Slow video output
- Try a different -vo driver (-vo help for a list) or try -framedrop!
- Slow CPU
- Don't try to play a big DVD/DivX on a slow CPU! Try some of the lavdopts,
e.g. -vfm ffmpeg -lavdopts lowres=1:fast:skiploopfilter=all.
- Broken file
- Try various combinations of -nobps -ni -forceidx -mc 0.
- Slow media (NFS/SMB mounts, DVD, VCD etc)
- Try -cache 8192.
- Are you using -cache to play a non-interleaved AVI file?
- Try -nocache.
Read DOCS/HTML/en/video.html for tuning/speedup tips.
If none of this helps you, read DOCS/HTML/en/bugreports.html.

But I'm getting the same stuttering, when playing the DVD.

I am getting a very similar error message. Did you ever resolve this?
Thanks - Dan

This could be unrelated, but try switching off Compiz-Fusion if you have it running. I had a similar problem, and as soon as I switched back to the metacity window manager the problem went away.

Compiz-Fusion can't be the problem, because I never had it enabled. And never will...
Thanks for your reply...

Yes. In the mean time I've upgraded to F9 and the problem is gone.
