Fglrx not working in Fedora 9?

I tried installing fglrx from ATI's website but I cannot get it to work. The radeon driver supplied with Fedora 9 cannot do Direct Rendering it seems.

I have a Fully Updated Fedora 9 installation
ATI Mobility Radeon x1400

Using the Radeon driver I get;

The stock driver from ATI/AMD's website does not support the kernel being used in F9. You will need to apply patches in order to get it to work. You should be able to find patches at Phoronix. The other option is to wait for the new driver to show up in the Livna development repository. It should show up any day now. It should work on the 32-bit flavor but from a mailing list post there are problems with it working for 64-bit.

Sorry, I don't play with ATI/nVidia drivers until Livna releases them in their standard repo.

I naively did 'yum install fglrx' and rebooted to find the kernel didn't like it. I tryed to use 'linux rescue' from my install disk but I didn't know what command to use to restore the system.. in the end I just reinstalled the whole thing.

Should have come here first Just need to wait on livna then..

By the way, for future reference, what could I have done to restore the system to before I installed the incompatible fglrx?

just edit the: /etc/X11/xorg.conf
and under device replace 'fglrx' with 'vesa' (makes xorg use the generic vesa driver)

The new fglrx driver is in the Livna development repo as of yesterday, however it looks like it still doesn't work with the XServer version that F9 is based off of. I imagine that the only way to use it at this point would be to manually downgrade to the X.Org version used by F8.

F9 hasn't been officially released yet, remember to use livna-devel and not livna for now. As well, F9 the Alpha/Beta/Preview releases are still using some pretty experimental stuff; Kernel 2.6.25 was only released a few days ago and Xorg 1.4.99 is still in development... The ATI drivers don't officially support either one, so your mileage may vary.

As far as I know, the driver compiles against 2.6.25 but on x86_64 systems it can't be loaded and on both x86 and x86_64 systems won't run with Xorg 1.4.99

Hopefully Catalyst 8.05 will support Xorg 1.5 and Kernel 2.6.25.

Has the situation changed at all yet? Anyone successfully got FGLRX in F9?

I was downloading a copy of Ubuntu for someone at work from our corporate mirror and noticed they'd got a Fedora 9 beta live disk on their as well. I've snagged a copy and burned a disk, but I don't want to install it if it's going to mess up my graphics I know Livna have RPMs in their F9 repo (kmod-fglrx-8.476-1.8.04.lvn9.i686.rpm at the moment) but I wanted to check that there wasn't still the issue that Firewing mentions of it compiling but not working

Nope, hopefully 8.5 which is due soon will introduce a fix for the 2.6.25 symbol problem. If not, looks like a lot of F9 users are either without fglrx or going to have to downgrade to 2.6.24

So Livna have RPMs they've built that don't work? That's a shame :\ I guess I'll have to keep using F8 until ATI/AMD get an update for the new versions.

Thanks.

Yup They build but as I mentioned because the ATI don't support 2.6.25, a symbol lookup error occurs. You can use the fglrx drivers and F9 if you downgrade the Xorg server and the kernel to the versions currently in F8.

Why doesn't Livna patch the ATI driver tpo work with 2.6.25 ?

We have, but we can't have akmods modify the kernel sources so the export problem on x86_64 still appears.

Which parts of XOrg need downgrading? Is it just the one part that needed downgrading to an F7 version when F8 came out? It's just I'm on limited bandwidth at home, so I'd rather download the files at work and take them home
