Arrow NetworkManager 0.7.0 has lost track of both eth0 and wlan0

For reasons unknown to me, my NetworkManager app has suddenly lost track of both my wired Ethernet and my Wireless Ethernet interfaces. Everything was trucking along fine and I was really enjoying the ease of use and the flexibility that the current NetworkManager was providing with F8 x86_64. I never had to fuss with it, never had to do anything to it. It simply worked and I was simply happy.

Several weeks ago, I looked into the System->Administration->Network app and noticed that I had 4 interfaces listed there: eth0, eth0.bak, wlan0, and wlan0.bak

When I went to exit out of the application, I received a warning that there were errors due to the fact that wlan0.bak and eth0.bak were using the same hardware devices as the 'normal' eth0 and wlan0. I figured that this was an easy fix, so I simply deleted the *.bak listings. I had done this in the past and everything was fine, so I saw no reasons not to do it that time either. The interfaces continued to work and all seemed to be good until I rebooted, then there was no network interfaces listed in NetworkManager and I cannot use it to connect to or find any network, wired or not.

Both interfaces are sill listed in the system-config-network app (without the .bak extension) and I can enable them manually {using the wireless now, manually brought up} so I know there is nothing wrong with the hardware or drivers. It almost has to be a flat config file somewhere but I don't know enough about how NetworkManager works to know where to look for said file. Unfortunately, http://www.gnome.org/projects/NetworkManager/ doesn't offer any real clues on this either.

The searches I have conducted both on the I-Net and through this forum have all produced tons of results, but none that appear to address this exact issue.

Could someone please tell me what has likely happened and what I can do to resolve it?

2 things come to mind to try, disable the network mangager services and reboot. Then using the system->admin ->network, try and activate and connect using either the wired or wireless nic. The other is reenable Network Manager, and clicking the icon, make sure Networking is checked and also wireless.

Mike,

Thanks for chiming in.

Perhaps I didn't make some of the finer points clear. Let me try to clarify a little...

NetworkManager service is on and the icon for it is in the panel where I put it. It is enabled.
Turning off the service makes the icon go away as expected. Starting the service again puts the icon right back where it should be and it shows active. Problem --> Clicking on the icon to see the networks found results in a message

"No network devices have been found"
I can manually force either of the interfaces up via
Code:
system-config-network
so I know the hardware is good.

What I want is to regain the ease and flexibility that NetworkManager has provided in the past.

How do I get NetworkManager to find the existing network devices and make use of them again?

May not fix it for you but I've had a similar issue in the past. If you go into the NetworkManager app I seem to recall there being a checkbox for using networkmanager to manage the adapters or something along those lines (odd I know as you're already running the app). Try disabling and reenabling it, I know that fixed it for me, although I don't use it at all now.

Good catch with the "controlled by NetworkManager" Scotty. Open the system ->administration ->network, highlight the devices and click the "edit" tab. Uncheck the box for "activate on boot", and add check marks to the "controlled by NM, and allow "users to enable/disable the device"

Talking

Well, I owe you gentlemen both a huge debt of gratitude.

I went back through the settings in
Code:
system-config-network
and found that box the two of you mentioned. I have to say that I have never seen it prior to today.

Long story short, there were no check marks in the boxes. I selected them, restarted the service and it immediately tried to make a connection to a wireless network.

A quick reboot confirms that all appears to be good again.

I still don't know how this could have been changed from working to nonworking, but I am really glad to have it working again.

Thanks!
