Requesting help with F8 PS3

Hi all, Linux newbie here..

I have installed Fedora 8 following this guide:

http://www.bohmer.net/ps3_stuff/inst...-8-on-PS3.html

I've followed this apart from choosing Gnome and KDE rather than XFCE, and I'm having these problems:

Neither KDE nor Gnome recognizes/mounts CDs/DVDs.

KDE comes up with an error "The application Soundserver (artsd) crashed and caused the signal 6 (SIGABRT)" when started.

If I try to add/remove software (in either DE) it asks me to insert CD Fedora 8 (disc1).

Any help would be much appreciated!

It has been a while since I tried F8 on the PS3, but I think I have seen this mentioned before:

Ah thanks that sorted that out I take it you're the same billb from the YDL community board? I have to thank you again, your posts there were a great help with YDL as well

Yep -- that's me. Good luck with F8 ... I may end up skipping it entirely and try Fedora 9 if someone reports it is booting OK on the PS3.

Actually I've given up on 8 for now Looks nice though, and I like the repo manager. Currently trying out another distro, as I'm new to Linux I'm trying out various distros. I could try the F9 beta on an external drive - I notice you have installed F7 on a USB drive.. I didn't realise you could do this - don't the USB devices all get deregistered when booting up? Or not I tried setting up YDL using a RAID set up, it installed fine but wouldn't boot due to the deregistering..

I haven't tried booting YDL 6 on a USB drive, but yes, Fedora 7 works fine booting from USB on the PS3. I tried YDL 5 on USB before but couldn't get it working.

Which distro are you trying now?

Hello again. I'm currently on openSUSE 10.3, which runs nicely on PS3 but with the same issue as Fedora 8 with CDs (and every other distro I've tried apart from YDL, though with that on KDE it auto-ejected the CDs, Gnome and Enlightenment seemed fine). I realise I can't automount, the problem I'm having is getting any audio program to recognize there's an audio CD in there. Any help would be much appreciated on this, haven't found a solution anywhere (this did as I say affect F8 as well, haven't tried F7). I'm probably going to try the F9 beta on my external drive this weekend, I'll report back how that goes if you're interested..
