How hot is hot?

I have a P4 2.4 with a turbine cooler on it...the cooler is rated for 3GHz...I have like 6 fans on the system...

the internal case temp (all reported through the mobo) is 35C, but the CPU is sitting at 47C.

at what point should I be concerned?

I wouldn't think the temps are too bad, are the tmeps at idle or under load?

Check the heatsink is installed the correct way round (no I don't know which way but check the heatsink contact material is in full contact with the CPU. - have been caught out by this one myself before

Some Mobos report incorrect temps - check a forum for your mobo manufacturer

check the voltage required for your CPU, maybe the mobo is feeding too much.

You have SIX fans - are they all blowing out, sucking air in? a balanced system (three in three out - assuming they are all the same size should aid cooling and quieten things down a bit also)

More of an AMD person for quite a few years. current amd64 runs at 36 - 42 depending on load and ambient temps.

47C is nothing to be too worried about, I think 60+ is where you need to really worry for CPU temps.

Intel's processor specifications state what the "thermal spec" (operational temperature) is for each family... 47C should be well with in range.

In my case the overheating occurs even when the processor is idle. The temp goes over 70 C.

f_bicudo,

You definately have a problem. You need to make sure you have thermal paste between your heatsink and CPU and that the heatsink is tight against the CPU. Also make sure the heatsink fan is running and that you are not overclocking.

also, apply thermal paste very sparingly. Less is more. If it came oozing out the sides when you put the heat sink over the cpu then you applied far too much.

My problem is that this overheating occurs only in Fedora. When using WinXP everything is fine.

Maybe XP is Bull****ing as usual.
There is only one thing to do with hot air, - get rid of it.
I run CPU fans backwards, sucking not blowing. straight out of the case, via ducting.

Probably because the CPU driver on XP supports clock throttling and will throtle back the CPU speed when it reaches a certain temperature. The reason I'm saying this is because FC2 doesn't support any form of CPU scaling right out of the box and I've spent a long time trying to enable it.
