I'm having problems...
Ok, heres the deal. I have a dual-boot laptop, with XP and Fedora Core 2 installed. XP can connect to the internet, but Fedora can't. I connect through LAN on an ethernet card, using Cable modem. I'm am new to Linux and want to learn it. I know basic commands, like cp and rm, but other than that I am a newbie. Can anyone provide assistance?

to conect to the internet using linux you first MUST know your ISP DNS primary and secondary address for example 123.45.57.8 something like this.
Since you use cable you will have to call them or go to their website and get dns address.
once you have that goto redhat panel >system tools >internet configuration wizard and select ethernet connection. After you done there it will take you to Network configuration and you will see a DNS tab you enter your cable company dns numbers there for you to have access.
i hope this helps...knowing the dns address applies to dial up, dsl, and cable but with dialup and dsl you have to enter your user id and pass and i dont think that is the case with cable.
BTW.....welcome to LINUX!

I would answer this a bit differently...
Assumptions:
1) dual booting XP and Fedora on the same Laptop
2) only one ethernet card...PCMCIA? on board?
3) fresh installs of both with formated space for / and /boot
4) Cable modem tells me that you are probably a typical home user Cox, adelphia etc...
5) You have a DHCP leased IP address...
If this is true, then...
1) do an "ifconfig" from the terminal screen and post the output.
2) do a "mii-tool" and post the response
3) If you are using the GUI, you should be able to run the network tool and can see that you have -- eth0 set to DHCP and check the box to pull down DNS information and host name with DHCP...You shouldn't need to go ask for this, it should come along with the DHCP lease. Your eth0 should be shown as active....If not, click the configure and activate buttons.
You probably are having an issue with setting up the ethernet card, or you have the IP set to static.
let me know what you find.
