Hello Dr.AMA
Can you run the command:
in a terminal window.
That will give details of all the pci devices attached to your machine.
There will be one for "network" devices and one for "ethernet" devices. The network device should be your wireless interface.
Could you copy and paste back the details for that card.
If in doubt post back with both or all devices.

How are you attempting to connect ? What tool are you using.
If the device shows up in "ifconfig -a" then ...
Enable the NetworkManager and NetworkmanagerDispatcher services,
Left click on the sigStrength icon in the upper panel and select "connect to other network" and enter the authentication info.

Please check your kernel version using uname -r
The 2.6.24.3-12 kernel was very broken for us wlan users. Especially if you need WEP encryption. If you are running the -12 kernel, hook up with a wire and do a yum update.

Hello Dr.AMA
I have the same 3945ABG wireless card as you in a laptop here. I didn't actually try it with the 24.3-12 kernel as I knew there were problems with that and some wireless cards.
It has worked well with all of the other kernels though since Fedora 8 was released.
Assuming that you have one of the other kernels all should be in place for your card to work.
Could you try the commands:
in a terminal to obtain root access. That is a space and a minus sign after the su and they are important. Without them you get roots rights but only within your ordinary area of operations.
With the space and minus you gain full root rights. Surprisingly enough the commands I am going to ask you to run work differently on two different laptops I have access to. One works without the 'su -' one doesn't. Therefore I specify it to make sure.
Then run:
Make a note of the interface detected, probably wlan0, and then run:
If the interface you find in the earlier command is not wlan0 then substitute it in the second command and post back the results.
I suppose we should have asked earlier. Are you running Fedora 8 or an earlier version?

Hello Dr.AMA
That's very odd. On my machine with a 3945ABG the results from the iwlist command look like this:

That's me blanking out the MAC addresses by the way.
I've had that sort of response since using the kernel and drivers you have installed.
Two thoughts come to mind. Do you have the broadcast name of your wireless access point set to be hidden? That can cause problems for Linux Wireless.
Is there a possibility that you could connect to the internet by wire and update your Fedora installation. I'm not sure what that would prove, but it's pretty much all I can think of given your results.
If you have a live cd version of Fedora then it may be worth booting up from that for a while. My 3945 worked straight away from that through NetworkManager on the Gnome Panel in the notification area to the top right.
That would at least assure us that none of your previous attempts at connecting are conflicting with what we are trying now.
Don't try to control the card through the Gnome System Menu - Administration - Network because that conflicts with NetworkManager and the other way around.

I have the same card (Intel 3945ABG) and it works fine from the Network Manager applet. To set the applet to start on each login, go to:
System --> Preferences --> Personal --> Sessions
And add (if it isn't already there):
Name: Network Manager
Command: nm-applet --sm-disable
Then go to:
System --> Administration --> Services (you'll need to enter your root password)
And make sure that NetworkManager and NetworkManagerDispatcher are checked (ticked).
After that, reboot and you should be given an icon in the notification area. When you click on it, you should then be given a list of wireless networks within range - the rest is fairly straightforward

I have the same card in a Lenovo T60
03:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection (rev 02)
With the 2.6.24.3-34 kernel it connects fine to my wep-protected home network using NM, but I do have a weird issue.
It only connects once. If I need to reconnect some hours later I have to reboot my router/access point and then disable and reenable networking in NM. Then just wait until it discovers the access point again. After rebooting the router/access point this takes some time, but then it works. Just restarting networking or even rebooting the laptop isn't enough. It finds the network much faster then, it claims to associate ok, but it never manages to get a dhcp reply. My cellphone connects fine, so the router/access point is ok. I believe NM somehow caches too much from the previous connection unless I also reboot the access point.

To clarify... With restarting networking I mean through the nm applet.
Right-click on the applet and disable wireless. Then disable networking. Then enable both again in opposite order. Then wait until my wlan is listed again and click on it. And as I said this only works if I reboot my combined router/access point first.

Hello CraigWatson and birger
I think you are both one step further ahead than Dr.AMA.
His problem seems more to do with getting his card recognised rather than controlling it.
I'm sure that if you both do the iwlist command I mentioned in post#6 you would get the output that Dr.AMA is missing.
birger,
Odd your having to reboot the access point. Is there a possibility that it's time based? I had a problem at one time where I had to wait for my card to forget what it had loaded in it before I could restart and regain control of it. In my instance, waiting 10 minutes to reboot wasn't enough, 15 minutes was.
If you are rebooting your machine my other suggestion to try probably won't make any sense, but:
Code:
service NetworkManager restart
as root, will reload your wireless where restarting the network won't.
