You need to have a third party repository like Livna installed in order to be able to download multimedia codecs that are not available directly from Fedora for licensing reasons. The Livna repository is probably not yet set up for Fedora 9 because Fedora 9 is still in the testing stage. It won't be finished till the end of April. If I were you, I would go back to Fedora 8 where everything is available for you and wait till Fedora 9 officially comes out in order to play AVIs. Fedora 9 at the present stage is supposed to be only for those who want to test it and report bugs. It's not yet a completed OS.

Remove the VERY buggy alpha of F9 as you shouldn't be using it unless you know what you're doing, install the current STABLE release, which is Fedora 8, then check the links in my sig... especially the first one as this is probably the first... or second most asked question!

One more time, you should NOT be playing with the APLHA release of F9 unless you are prepared for it to crash suddenly and if you NOT are a beta tester. If you continue to use F9, don't expect any help from this forum for an unreleased product.

Lack of AVI playback isn't a bug !! , use the livna development repo for the non-free ( AVI + more )
