Odd grey screen with two white lines on install
Hey,
I've been trying to install Fedora 8 on my Dell Inspiron 6000 and have found it quite tricky. At first it seemed to hang on the /sbin/loader (which i initially solved by adding floppy.allowed_drive_mask=0 clocksource=acpi_pm to the install commands but then realised waiting 15 minutes does the same thing) and it moves through the installation. I check the dvd and that's ok shortly after it gets to a point where the screen goes white and gradually turns into a grey screen with two vertcal white lines about an inch thick. Here it stays.
I managed to install Fedora 8 in text-only mode, but that isn't really what i want.
Currently i have it (the text only os) dual-booting with windows.
Anyone have any ideas as to what has gone wrong?
Cheers,
Jason

I've got no idea what's causing it, but if you've got another system around, you can do a vnc installation. So you would pass the installer something like this
Code:
linux floppy.allowed_drive_mask=0 clocksource=acpi_pm ipaddr=192.168.2.1 netmask=255.255.255.0 vnc vncpassword=mypassword
Then you can fire up vncviewer on the other box and do the install that way.

If it's already installed, go on and install Livna and the proper video drivers for your architecture. That should be all. Then take a look here for the needed video card tutorial http://www.firewing1.com/content/blogcategory/37/40/

Brilliant! Thanks guys, it is installing now. I used the vnc install.
Nokia-I just insalled the text version of the OS, so i'm not sure if installing video drivers would work, but thanks for your comment.
I'll let you all know if it turns out ok.
Cheers

I think you'll have no choice but to install the proprietary drivers... Otherwise you would have had an installation screen in the first place.

Another thing. Make sure you have id:5:initdefault: and not id:3:initdefault: To that end, type and make necessary modifications. Then Press Ctrl+o to save (o as in opera ) and Ctrl+x to exit. In the end reboot with init 6. That should be all.
