Boy, THAT was quick!

Seems like only a month or two ago we were reporting that Walmart was sold out of the linux machines....http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5h...zQxvgD8VAQTSG0

Hmmm.

Tanking the entire marketing offering based on a single quarter? (Albeit through the Christmas season)

Methinks I smell a Redmond rat.

Yep! there definitely is a foul odor about their reason for not restocking. I had seen the Everex computers in 2 different Walmart stores and they were sold out within 2 weeks. There have been PC's with XP on them also and have been pulled from the shelves>just an observation I've made over the past few months and also take into consideration that stock is shifted to other areas of the country.

Just a guess, but it may have to due with problems w/ the gOS distro. I have a bad feeling that gOS is lots of hype and not much technical performance.

Anyone have experience w/ gOS ?

The 'Evil Empire' probably did something similar to what they did to IBM when Win95 was released and refused to let them have heavy discounts on the OS unless they stopped offering OS/2 as a dual boot option.

A friend of mine bought one a few months ago, he had nothing but problems with gOS. He came very close to returning it. But he ended up ditching gOS and put Gentoo on it, which worked much better. And this, mind you, was a very experienced Linux user (since the early 90's). So I'm not surprised it flopped. While MS conspiracy theories may satisfy the tinfoil hat crowd, I think the more likely explanation is that gOS is simply crap. I wonder what their return rate was.

Hm. Wal-Mart and M$ - sounds like "Alien vs. Predator" to me. I'm sure that the Wal-Mart bean-counters have analyzed this eight ways to Sunday, and determined that it's not profitable to continue. In this case, I don't think Predator had to do anything, Alien just made a bad move.

You may very well be right, Rupert. One wonders why they didn't pick the brown *buntu for such an endeavor. But I think I'll keep my tin foil stetson handy anyway. Just in case.
