rpm --root doesn't work on FC8

I am using rpm "RPM version 4.4.2.2" on FC8 X86_64, but it doesn't work with --root option.

> rpm --root=/home/cjia/workareas/rpm_root/fc8_root/ -Uvh setup-2.6.10-1.fc8.noarch.rpm

Are you using root to type this command?It seems to be a privilege issue.

what root are you in, user root or su

The rpm man page says to use --root DIRECTORY, not --root=DIRECTORY. Try that.
