Fedora 8 :: X turns off vga lcd monitor

When I tried to install Fedora 8, it turns off my monitor when it goes to the graphical mode. I see a blank monitor with a blinking power light. I tried all the options to turn off power management, but to no avail. I gave up and installed it in text mode. When I start the X server, again it turns my monitor off. I used an xorg.conf file from another distro, only changing the "nvidia" driver to nv. Same problem.

BTW, I am using Fedora 8 x86_64, XFX GeForce 8600 GT card with 256 Mb DDR3. I have the DVI -> VGA adapter to run my Samsung SyncMaster 170N 17 in LCD monitor.

The system is running Intel e6750 Core 2 Duo on a Asus P5K-E Mobo w/ Intel P35 chipset.

I run Fedora 8 x86_64on my Core 2 work machine just fine with the same graphics card, but I am driving a DVI monitor with it. It has a slightly older Intel mobo.

I would be greatful for any advice on this one. It would be especially nice to use the graphical installer, if possible.

Thanks!

I think I have found the problem. Apparently there are some problems with Fedora 8 nVidia drivers (and ATI as well) that cause these sorts of problems. I am running Mandriva 2008 on the same system, and nVidia drivers detect and install perfectly. For Fedora 8, the temporary fix is to enter "vesa" as an option when you start the install. This will let you use the full-up graphical installer, which is much nicer. When you finish, your system will run using the vesa drivers. You must then go back and re-configure xorg.conf to get the video the way you want. At some point, I will try to manually install the nVidia drivers. I hope this helps anyone who has experienced this problem.

i use fglrx (ATI) so i installed it all with no problems also when you get a kernel up date you kmod nvidia and kmod fglrx will not work till you match the os kernel with the driver kernel. to install fglrx open konsole and type su
then type root password

it should look like this

[KDE@localhost ~]$ su
Password:
[root@localhost KDE]#

do both yum install kmod-fglrx xorg-x11-drv-fglrx-libs-32bit

yum install kmod-fglrx xorg-x11-drv-fglrx-libs-64bit

or do it like this yum install kmod-fglrx xorg-x11-drv-fglrx-libs-64bit kmod-fglrx xorg-x11-drv-fglrx-libs-32bit

as for nvidia do this yum install kmod-nvidia you also need the livna repo do this
rpm -hiv http://rpm.livna.org/livna-release-8.rpm then
rpm --import http://rpm.livna.org/RPM-LIVNA-GPG-KEY
open package manager and do a search for livna and insrall the gui for livna. install it you can do all this using hte packagemanager but you need to install the livna repo before any thing else is done.

go to the myguides.net site for a better instructions and do it from page one to the last its not hard.

for compiz stuff go here and talk to Leigh.
