Question Installation DVD skipped by computer - Help!

Installation DVD recieved with a Wiley book on Fedora 8. The DVD has been tested on another computer and works fine.

1. I have changed the boot order in BIOS setup to CDROM drive first.

2. As I restart the computer with the DVD in the drive:

The compaq screen appears.

A black screen appears, with the cursor blinking in upper left corner. The DVD is spinning and the LED ins blinking.

After about 15-20 seconds the DVD stops spinning, the LED goes off and Windows XP starts to boot.

3. PLEASE HELP!

System is a Compaq Presario 5000 Pentium 3. I replaced the CDROM drive with an LG DVD reader/CD writer drive. No other changes. Please also note that a GNOME Live CD works fine.

Expecting definitive answers. Am open to technical language.

Thanks.

The DVD that was included with your book may just simply not read correctly on your LG drive. Is that DVD mountable/readable while windows is booted? You should be able to browse the file structure.

Your options may be:
- get an iso (either from that dvd or better just download it directly), burn it and try with media your own drive burned
- try a network installation using the minimal rescue cd to begin the install

You may also try the fedora unity respin images (iso with install and latest updates included), since some machines have install problems with the F8 release, so take a look at http://www.fedoraunity.org/

Hi!

Sorry for the trouble. I found that the DVD drive's lens was weak, and got it changed. Its all installed and working now!

It seems that although the drive would read DVDs the lens took an awfully long time to do that, not being able to do so within the BIOS defined time frame.

Thanks!
