acpi=force

Before biting the bullet, and install Fedoray on a windows98 computer to an external USB media hard drive, I would like to first ensure the hardware is acceptable by launching the live cd.

The live cd will not install. After several minutes with modules installing "OK", it pauses for a couple of minutes on localhost and then a smaller arrowhead stardust cursor appears, and nothing further happens. The cursor does not respond to the mouse.

I have tried installing the live cd with Dog-One's Fedora Installation Options, but the same 10 minute plus of activity or inactivity happens. Near the beginning of the installation, I noticed the message, "acpi=force is required to enable ACPI". This message always appears, and even entering acpi=force, by pressing the TAB from the installation menu, to make the existing command line accessible, doesn't make any difference. Short of upgrading the bios, is there anything else I can try?
