usbserial question

I have internal verizon wireless cell evdo card in my laptop its a novatel chipset, to get it to work under linux i made the following changes
In rc.local I added "modprobe usbserial"
in modprobe.conf I added "options usbserial vendor=0x413c product=0x8133"

Now under /dev/ I see
ttyUSB0 and ttyUSB1

I use ttyUSB0 to connect but I was wondering is there a way to determine signal strength with USB1? I know that you can with USB0 before you connect using minicom but not after you're connected

Also is there a way to add it to NetworkManager (gnome)?

Well to be honest yours is not a USB serial question and you'd be far better off reposting with a correct title.

I have no clue what commands are supported on the two serial ports for your specific hardware. That's specific your your verizon edvo card. My hunch is that they would not duplicate the command structure on both ports.

YOU need to collect some information before you go any farther.
What is the exact edvo card model ?
Is this pcmcia or usb (very unclear to me) ?
What does "lspci" or "lsusb" report ?
What tools are you using ? What command do you use to

Next you need to go to google.com/linux and do a search for that model. You question is not a fedora specific question, so it's probably answered elsewhere.

Thanks for getting back to me

lsusb reports
Bus 004 Device 002: ID 413c:8133 Dell Computer Corp

The card is a minicard that runs off of usb internally
The card model is DW5720 Verizon minicard

using minicom attaching to ttyUSB0 prior to a connection and issue at commands
at+csq
31, 99

OK

the first value indicates signal strength you want a value of 7 or better

I'm not an ev-do guy but I have used a lot of modems.
Also I do not know your specific hardware.

My *hunch* is thatthe second serial port is just an artifact of the hardware they used on the pcmcia and has no function. I could be wrong.

It often/usually is possible to slip modem commands, like the "at+csq" into the data stream after the connection occurs, with a prefix that identifies it as command and not data. You'd need to know the details of that modem and it's out-of-band signalling capabilities and also have a data app that understood this.

google is your friend here and google.com/linux.

best of luck,
-S

thanks, I dont know how to slip commands in

I've been googling away and found that its a rebranded Novatel U727 and everyone is having issues with it, I guess I should just be happy it works

I put windows on in a small partition and installed the software for it from dell and it does work better as far as connecting, higher download speeds, ability to send sms messages with it

but once I am connected under linux, usually 4 or 5 attempts, it stays connected which is great

anyway thanks again for trying to help
