Assuming that the file you downloaded really has been gzipped (instead of just being named like it has been) then typing "gunzip ids904_linux_disk2.cpio.gz" should just work. The most likely explanation that I can think of is that the file got corrupted during download. If the website provides an MD5SUM for this file on their download site you can check by typing "md5sum ids904_linux_disk2.cpio.gz" and comparing the output to the MD5SUM at oracle.com. If they don't match then the download failed and you'll have to do it again. If there are no MD5SUMs then I'd just download it again anyway and see if that fixes the problem.

Some web browsers automatically gunzip files as they're downloaded, but don't rename them accordingly. To find out what kind of file you've got, use the "file" command:

you@localhost$ file ids904_linux_disk2.cpio.gz

If that reports back "cpio archive" then it's already gunzipped and you can rename and extract it:

you@localhost$ mv ids904_linux_disk2.cpio.gz ids904_linux_disk2.cpio
you@localhost$ cpio -imVd < ids904_linux_disk2.cpio

when that happens, i usually just open it with File-Roller since it can automatically determine the type of file.

Try renameing it to file_name.tar.gz
and then tar xvfz file_name.tar.gz
