    WEP key not getting set via ifup-wireless on FC6

    I am trying to set up wireless connection automatically via "service network start". Everything except the key gets set properly on the device. I have set up all the config scripts and keys. I have also verified via strace that the the command " iwconfig wlan0 key <hex key> " gets executed but when I do execute " iwlist wlan0" the key is set ot off. This causes dhclient to hang as it cannot acquire an address. If i manually set the key in another shell while dhclient is still running it acquires address fine. Is it a permission thing? Does anyone have any ideas or have an example of a set of config files that works on their system?

    Thanks
    Fabio

    Smile ifcfg-wlan0 set WEP for wireless

    I modify /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-wlan0 to start my wireless card after much failure.

    Here is my content of /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-wlan0

    #DHCP client
    DEVICE=wlan0
    BOOTPROTO=dhcp
    ONBOOT=Yes
    HWADDR=XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX
    TYPE=Wireless
    USERCTL=no
    PEERDNS=yes
    IPV6INIT=no
    ESSID=XXXXX
    IWCONFIG="key XXXXX"
    CHANNEL=X
    MODE=Managed
    RATE=Auto

    I use IWCONFIG="key XXXXX" to set a IWCONFIG key command instead of using "KEY=XXXXX"
    KEY=XXXXX doesn't work on my FC8. Don't know why.

    When you edit your /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-wlan0
    Save it.

    In the terminal
    [root@localhost network-scripts]# ifup wlan0

    If everything is okay, you should get your DHCP IP address.

    Try adding
    NM_CONTROLLED=no

    Edit:
    Also do you have wpa_supplicant starting on boot?

    No wpa_supplicant is not running. I tried adding NM_CONTROLLED but still does not work. It is strange b/c I verified that " iwconfig key <key> gets run via strace but something else must be turning it off as the key is set to off when I check the status via iwconfig wlan0 while dhclient is trying to acquire address.

    thanks for your response.

    Take iwconfig key out.

    Go to /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/keys-wlan0
    Set the key in hex here.

    Thank you for your suggestion but that was my original method that did not work. Again, I confirmed that it gets set but something else in the network-scripts unsets it. I am not sure what.

    Have you tried to set this up via sysconfig.
    System>Administration>Network.?

    Edit: Also check System>Administration>Services
    See that Network is set to start on boot.

    ok I found what it was but I do not feel comfortable doing it.

    Using strace I found that the ifup-wireless gets called at some point and in that script the command
    iwconfig dev key <key> gets issued
    After a few other commands the command
    iwconfig essid any
    gets issued
    This command ends up turning the key off .
    I commented out that line and it works now. I am sure that the line I commented out is probably needed but since it works now I will leave it that way.

    I am surprised that no one else is experiencing this problem. Is this a bug? A driver problem? I am not sure but if anyone has any info on when the iwconfig essid any is needed please let me know.

    Thanks for all the replies up to this point.

    My F8 script is a bit different, are you setting the essid?
    The line below wont or "shouldn't" get executed if you did
    This is what you commented out correct?

    Code:
    else
        # use any essid
        iwconfig $DEVICE essid any >/dev/null 2>&1
