Question Fedora 8 - Belkin F5D7050 USB wireless problems

Hello,

Sorry for posting on a topic that is listed so frequently in this forum, but I've tried many of the suggestions in these posts but still have not had any luck in getting connection through my wireless card...

I've installed the driver using ndiswrapper, and it appears to be working:

[root@localhost ~]# ndiswrapper -l
blkwgu : driver installed
device (050D:705C) present (alternate driver: zd1211rw)

iwconfig also seems to recognize the card:

[root@localhost ~]# iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions.

eth0 no wireless extensions.

wmaster0 no wireless extensions.

wlan0 IEEE 802.11g ESSID:""
Mode:Managed Channel:0 Access Point: Not-Associated
Tx-Power=0 dBm
Retry min limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr=2352 B
Encryption key:off
Link Quality:0 Signal level:0 Noise level:0
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0

But I still cannot connect...

Attached a screenshot of my network config, basically just shows my wired nic card, but no wireless.

Anyone know how I should proceed from here to get this running? Any help is much appreciated.

Also forgot to mention that I did try to configure the wireless network using the following cmds, but still no luck:

iwconfig wlan0 essid [SSID]
iwconfig wlan0 channel auto
iwconfig wlan0 retry 16

So if anyone knows how to get past this, please let me know. Thanks.

Hello beasteater

The usual way to make a first attempt at configuring a wireless interface is with NetworkManager.

Personally I'm not sure what the long term effect of the command line configuring you have tried is.

As to your screenshot, at least one of my cards doesn't put an entry in the Wireless Configuration dialogue.

However, I suggest that you try the command:

Code:
iwlist wlan0 scan
from a root command prompt and see if it finds any networks.

You can get the root command prompt by typing:

Code:
su -
that's a space and a minus after the su

If it does, you should be able to see them in NetworkManager in the top Gnome panel to the right hand end by left clicking.

The Belkin usb wireless adapter does not require ndiswrapper or madwifi. The zydas chipset uses the zd1211rw driver that is included on the install disc.

Also when using the usb adapter it hasn't shown up under my network devices also but does with NetworkManager. I use 6 of the Belkin usb devices and they all use the zd1211rw drivers natively.

Thanks for the info guys, I'm updating this thread from my fedora machine. A little embarrassing that all I had to do was press a button and type my network SSID, but hey, that's why the fedora community is awesome... I am officially done w/ windows! Thanks again.
