Can’t find Network Manager/ Problems with wireless card/network

Hey all
I am new to Linux, and I know my way around simple things, but in my Genome desktop there is no network Manger on the top panel…so I can’t connect to ma wireless Internet connection…. I have tried active my wireless cards through Network Device control but getting error message “Error for wireless request Set Mode (8B06) SET failed on device wlan0 ; invalid argument” …
I am using acer aspire1680 series with an, Intel Pro/Wireless 2200BG, and I also have a pci network card from “Atheros Communications AR5213/AR5213 (Netgear WG511T)…..
Please help, how to connect to my wireless network/how to activate network Manger ....please do keep in mind I am a newbie….thanks very much for reading this…..
Ak

The message you have is just an annoyance - it's your ipw2200 saying thatthe data rate can only be set to "auto".

OTOH, I'd suggest you use NetworkManager or wifi-radar. These are different and incompatible ways to setup wireless so disable the wireless start-on-boot and use one of these instead. Search for the 2000 threads on these for setup detail.

BTW I have an ipw2200 - works beutifully with NM.

These cards use completely different drivers.
Are you saying they both give you the same error?
Pick ONE and lets try to get it going.
Are you using wireless security?

System> Administration> Devices tab
Assume you established a device here, edit and uncheck activate when computer starts
Check Controlled by Network Manager.

Goto System> Administration>Services Background services tab,
Look for network manager and network and manager dispatcher.
Check both, Scroll down and UNCHECK wpa supplicant.
