Installed application not in menu

Hey folks...

My apologies for punting on this, but I'm starting to put limits on how much time i can afford to spend hunting for answers to what i'm sure are comparatively simple answers (I'm just pissy because I'm a fedora noob that happens to be hungry (hungry because I'm spending so much time getting fedora do work for me!!)).

I installed VirtualBox by downloading from the site (couldn't get it to work, but that's another @@#$ing story). I have uninstalled/reinstalled x2, and it will not show up in the applications menu. Prefer not to use CLI yet.

Pointers? Much thanks...

Have you looked under System Tools > innotek VirtualBox ? (it's under the "I", not the "v")

otherwise you could press alt+F2 for a command box, then type something like virtualbox (if it's the correct command the icon will change )

Yessir, it was under system>tools before, but isnt now

it's not shown under the list of apps using alt+F2, but it is checked under Add/Remove software.

Thanks for the help folks, happy to hear any more suggestions, I'm out of ideas.

Hmmm...wonder if it's listed in System > Preferences > Look and Feel > Main Menu? Might actually be there, but not checked to show up. Of course, with that menu, you could first use a terminal and 'locate VirtualBox' and then create a launcher in the menu.

Most applications have a .desktop file located in /usr/share/applications.
Some .desktop files may have a specification "OnlyShowIn=" can keep it
from showing up except in a particular desktop environment.
More likely, installing from a foreign place can miss putting in a .desktop file.
If the application didn't get installed so that it works, the .desktop file wouldn't even matter.
You don't need it on the menu if it doesn't work.

bob -

yes it was listed there. i checked/unchecked it, opened/closed look and feel, still not listed in the menu.

are these kinds of problems typical for fedora? Installation was a bear. Had to buy a network card just to get it to connect. Tremendous effort took over 10 days and 10's of hours of study/effort. learned tons, but... Now, on the first application I'd like to use - more problems.

No, it's not usual. I personally haven't had much luck with VirtualBox myself and use qemu instead. You can launch it (or attempt to) by opening a terminal and typing "VirtualBox" and note the results. There may be instructions to get it working. For instance, my menu launcher doesn't do a thing, but if I try it in a terminal, I get:
Quote:
WARNING: The vboxdrv kernel module is not loaded. Either there is no module
available for the current kernel (2.6.23.14-107.fc8) or it failed to
load. Please recompile the kernel module and install it by

sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup

You will not be able to start VMs until this problem is fixed.
Cannot create/open directory '/tmp/.vbox-bob1-ipc/ipcd'
Abnormal termination.
As I mentioned, I'm only so-so on using VirtualBox and prefer qemu for now.
