Fedora 8 Firefox crashes

I'm running Fedora 8 on an x86_64 computer.

I've used firefox for years on earlier versions of Fedora with no problems but on Fedora 8 Firefox is crashing regularly when opening certain web sites.

I have updated Firefox to firefox-2.0.0.10-3.fc8 (from version 10-2) but the problem is now even worse.

I have checked my plugins and after a couple of fixes mozilla-config-plugin -help reveals no problems but there is no noticeable change in firefox crash behaviour.

Does anybody know how to fix this?

An example problem web site is www.seek.co.nz.

I would be interested to know if anybody running this version of firefox on an x86_64 computer can open this web site (and progress through the tabs). That would at least help me know whether the problem has anything to do with my configuration.

I was able to view the site with both www.seek.co.nz and seek.co.nz

However, I believe there is a problem in X86_64 since my Firefox crashes at different intervals with no particular site that I can determine. I have several tabs open that monitor the stock market from different sites.

I will try to narrow this down.

BTW have you looked at /var/log/messages to see if anything is there?

Thanks for this feedback. If your firefox version is the same as mine then this does suggest that there is something about my environment that is contributing.

My crashes are not random. I can view some sites with no problem but the one I quoted crashes every time I try to view it. The crash happens towards the end of the page load on this site. Prior to my upgrade, mentioned before, I could load this page but it crashed every time I tried to open the Advanced tab in it.

Another site that causes crashes for me is www.camberpete.co.uk. This barely loads at all.

There are no errors recorded in /var/log/messages.

I believe that something about the pages is a contributing factor, whether it be an HTML error or feature used. Since I can't load these pages I can't investigate this.

Hello:

As posted in other threads (http://forum.fedoraforum.org/forum/s...d.php?t=178652), it is possible and perhaps probable that your FF crashes are caused by faulty add-ons/plug-ins. This has been my experience. The only way to know for sure is to disable/remove all add-ons, then enable/re-install one at a time until the root cause of the crash(es) is isolated.

Regards,
V

Hmmm, this just started happening to me today - FF just quits randomly - up until today it was rock solid. For reference I am using firefox-2.0.0.10-3.fc8 on 64 bit F8

Is anyone else experiencing this using the foxmarks extension? I noticed that was updated today, which seems to coincide with the crashes beginning!

In your case, you already have a good clue as to the root cause of the crashes. I would suggest that you simply disable/remove that extension, and see if that stops the crashes. If it does, problem solved - either live without that extension, or install the older version. If not, must be something else....

I have confirmed that in my case plugins were responsible for the crashes. I can't be certain which one was responsible but think it was a Blackdown java plugin that was installed in an earlier version of Fedora and clearly was not handled by the upgrade.
I have yet to install a replacement that works. I am aware that this release is supposed to address some of the 64-bit plugin issues that plagued earlier releases.

Again, if you really want to know for sure exactly which add-on/plug-in is the root cause, I know of only one way to find out....

Removed these:
Daily Dilbert
Download Statusbar
Extended Statusbar
qtl

Disabled these:
Adblock Plus
Forecastfox l10n
Router Status

Then restarted firefox and noticed an instant improvement in speed and crashing on start up didn't happen.

Hello:

Last round of crashes on my box (F7, FF-2.0.0.10) I narrowed down to OpenOfficeorg extension, with a fairly high degree of certainty. Ad Block Plus, Daily Dilbert, Download Statusbar, FasterFox, and Update Notifier seem ok here; don't know about the rest, never used them. Different Fedora and FF versions, however, may behave completely differently.

V

Started acting up again, so I removed external IP because I noticed it timing out every once in a while, haven't really had much problem since.

Hi there!
Crash happened to my Firefox 2.0.0.8-2.fc8 in my 32-bit Fedora 8 as well, but in a different situation.
I installed Fedora 8 i386 on a Intel P4 631, 3G RAM, 2 hard drives machine with default settings. I downloaded 261 update packages and installed them successfully. For the first few hours after a required reboot, my Firefox worked nicely just as before. Then came the problem: I could not view some websites even when searching with Google, and i took a looooong time connecting to a website then gave me a alert that I should check my network.

Quote:
Unable to connect

Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at www.google.com.

* The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few
moments.

* If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
connection.

* If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.
But I can use Konqueror to access every web page I like, so it was not a network problem.
sometimes i can open a Google home page, but I failed to sign in by clicking on the "sign in" link on that page.
I opened "Error Console" window and got some error information and warnings message, like:
Quote:
Error: [Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x80004005 (NS_ERROR_FAILURE) [nsIPrefBranch.getComplexValue]" nsresult: "0x80004005 (NS_ERROR_FAILURE)" location: "JS frame :: file:///usr/lib/firefox-2.0.0.8/components/nsBrowserContentHandler.js :: anonymous :: line 517" data: no]
Source File: file:///usr/lib/firefox-2.0.0.8/components/nsBrowserContentHandler.js
Line: 499
and
Quote:
Error: syntax error
Source File: http://www.google.com.au/ig/extern_j...2lbMnrZ54Bs.js
Line: 86, Column: 1
Source Code:
()
as well as many warning ones. So must be something wrong inside Firefox with an installation settings by default.
Is there a way out ? or Anyone encountered anything similar ?

I get the problems almost solved by disabling IPv6 in Firefox, so I can view any page I want there is no "sign in" problem as well.
however, I can not use "Bookmarks" button in Google Tool Bar although the Gmail button is working properly. I found some new error message in Error Console saying:

Quote:
Error: Cc['@google.com/toolbar/bookmark-wrapper;1'] has no properties
Source File: file:///home/ydong/.mozilla/firefox/9ftso33l.default/extensions/%7B3112ca9c-de6d-4884-a869-9855de68056c%7D/lib/toolbar.js
Line: 85
anyone knows what's going on here ? thanks a lot~!!

Hello:

First, you should update to the latest available version of FireFox, which I believe is 2.0.0.10 for F8. The newer version may clear up your problems.

Second, please don't take this the wrong way, but have you read the above posts?
Quote:
Error: Cc['@google.com/toolbar/bookmark-wrapper;1'] has no properties

It sure looks to me like one of the extensions (I'm going to guess the Google Tool Bar) is the culprit. Disable, or better yet remove it.

V
