What app will be the first to Linux, as online music is begining to kick off, and just wondering whether apple or microsoft will try and get the linux community??

It is important for me as i love music, and whoever supports linux will get my vote! At the momment the current players allow you to play music, but not download legal music.

i don't think it's gonna happen any time soon. there's questionable license issues with wma, acc and mp3. the first one to resolve that will be the first one to market.

personally, i think musicmatch should make it's way back into linux. they've got an online music store as well.

not being a linux programmer I'm not sure but my guess would be that Apple is already the closest... OS X is based on BSD and while BSD code wont always or reliably (from what I remember, been know to be wrong) porting the BDSish code of iTunes should be an easier job than the one M$ is looking at (if they even are... sincerly doubt it, at least at the mid - top planning levels).

iTunes was the better product (I feel) and before I switched it was my music player of choice on windows. (Plus having drivers ...hopefully open sourced... for an iPod would be great. Im not up to speed on the latest linux and iPod compatability issues, but when I was looking for a Mp3 player none seemed to have straight forward linux support.)

So itunes and wmp are not on Linux, so what alternatives are there, considering i have over 10 gig of music in wma format, and can't get rhythmbox to play wma.

Any thoughts on this.

Mplayer is a video player that plays all kind of formats including wma. RPM is available from freshrpms.net.

There should be an xmms-aac plugin somewhere on freshrpms as well. I don't know if it will play iTunes files.

There's also a WMA plug-in for XMMS - I think Dag's got that one...

I have a plugin that makes xmms a frontend for mplayer, which allows me to play movies and music through xmms. However if any of you guys have used itunes, wmp or rhythmnbox, you will not it has a library feature where u can find songs. I was wondering if there is anything like this in Linux.

if not what are the channels to go through about starting a project like this.

Before this conversation goes any further I just wanted to make a point about your first post. Winamp and iTunes are closed source proprietory pieces of software and are not in any way true free software. Apple currently distributes its iTunes software "free" to windows users as a way of helping them to peddle both the music on their (admitedly rather good) iTunes and to support the market for their iPod music players. Whereas Winamp is an advertisement of sorts to encourage you to buy the "pro" version. Winamp is also named Win(dows)Amp(lifier) - and so unlikely to suddenly become Linamp.

You are unlikely to be seeing either application running natively on linux any time soon. But as scoob_e points out, you are more likely to see iTunes appearing on Linux natively, due to the nature of the iTunes store and similarity between the OS X environment and Linux. (Both are unix like operating systems).

I'd also like to point out that there is virtually no chance that Microsoft will start developing software for Linux. Especially as Microsoft spends so much time spreading fear, uncertainty and doubt about Linux. Microsoft sees Linux as a threat, and it will not do anything to help prop it up.

There is a commercial (as in you have to pay $40 for it) program known as Crossover Office, that is based upon Wine which is working towards letting you use Winamp and iTunes in Linux. But support is not going to be there for a few months at least. In the mean time I recommend that you try using XMMS with the plugins suggested by people in this thread. If you have any further questions then I recommend that you ask them in the support forums.

Has anyone had any luck using rhythmnbox with files other than ogg or mp3. As Rhythmbox does what i need, but it doesn't support any other apps. I tried compiling with xine and gstreamer, both had error!

I think M player could be refined and made a really sleek piece of software. Right now i just find it kind of bloated. Maybe give it a trimming down, streamline it, and it could be awesome. If not, i think I tunes will be next, probably shortly followed by Musicmatch. My guess

I reckon' Rythmbox is sweet, although there was no support for my WMA's I just converted them to OGG. Rythmbox is based on iTunes, and has done a pretty good job!

i think realplayer has taken the firt step....just check out the helix community by realplayer...which i think is cool.....

and zinf also has a very nice player, it tags music...it takes you to a website where you can download music and many skins for the player....
