Fedora 8 Networking Basics & VNC

Right, I have a home network set up as follows:

    Desktop PC
    IP - 192.168.1.12
    DNS Name - galileo

    Laptop
    IP - 192.168.1.132
    DNS Name - scaramouche

I'd ideally like to use VNC to view the screens of each machine when I'm not at that specific machine (so desktop can view laptop and laptop can view desktop).

I can currently ping both machines from each other via IP address, but not via name. Both machines are configured with the right name (i.e. both give the correct result when I run the hostname command from terminal) and both display the correct hostname on the GNOME login screen.

The IP & DNS server addresses are being given automatically via DHCP from the router -an Orange Livebox - and I can't change it because it's ISP-specific.

    Any ideas?

    Edit the /etc/hosts

On desktop add the following line

    Code:
     192.168.1.132 scaramouche
On the laptop add the following

    Code:
     192.168.1.12 galileo
This associates the ip to the hostname on both the boxes.

if I understand correctly galileo is the hostname of the pc and scaramouche is the hostname of the laptop.

Not sure but maybe pointing the lan side router gateway IP in /etc/resolv.conf might help but if already present then The second post would resolv the issue.

Brilliant - those edits for /etc/hosts were exactly what I was looking for. I've now got Samba and VNC set up perfectly

    Cheers guys!

The only question I have is, do you have any machines named "figaro" and "fandango"?

This is an old post, but I hope somebody is listening.

I think I understand correctly that you are trying to reach a Linux box from an XP machine. (and vice versa, of course) It is my impression that you are not using any special client on the XP machine to reach the Linux machine with VNC. Is that right? Are you using XP's installed Remote Desktop to reach the Linux machine?

Linux to Linux, use VNC. <- NX, many others.
    Linux to Windows, use rdesktop
Windows to Linux, I use TightVNC with ssh tunneling.
