USB Distro

Hey there,
I've got a 1gb USB drive to dedicate to a linux distro which will hopefully be persistant rather than a live cd. Its just a general on the go desktop system, but recovering/fixing windows computers is a bonus. Driver support should be good also, since its going to be plugged into unknown computers.
So im wondering if anyone has a distro installed on a usb flash drive, if so, what and why?

I would use fedora, but i really dont feel like trimming it down.

Also, i like/prefer KDE but im willing to use gnome if the rest of the distro checks out.

I would use Debian as it has good hardware detection
