Fatal Error cant load default font'fixed'

After an update I saw the following and XFree86 wont run.

I got that problem once, and it was because xfs wasn't started. Try running /sbin/chkconfig --list xfs as root and see if it says 5:on or 5:off. If it says 5:off, then run /sbin/chkconfig --level 5 xfs on, restart X and see if that works.

Following above made progress, XFree86 comes up but no fonts are displayed ( no words - just graphics )
