Recording from Line-in with audacity

I am trying to record from a cassette player to a wav file (or equivalent). In audacity, I set both output and input to : OSS: /dev/dsp

when i hit record, i can hear the cassette play through the speakers. when i play it back in audacity, i can hear it. However, i cant SEE it. the waveform is so small that is looks like a flat line. I've turned up the tape player as far as it goes and i've turned up the input volume in audacity as far as it goes. I am clearly misunderstanding something, because since i can hear it playback, surely the waveform is big enough to hear... so why isn't it displayed?

Thanks,

David

Well sure, I can zoom in a crazy amount and see it, but it should be a normal size (and hence volume) - like between the 1 and -1. Even between .01 and -.01 it is a very flat line... seems very odd to me. I know the level out of the cassette player is ok because in windows i see the normal sized waveform

any other suggestions?

David
