Unhappy installing on a brand new western digital hard drive

Hello all,

Here is my situation: I have been running fedora 8 for a while on my two old hard drives (hard drives are as old as 2003), which have just crashed and are beyond repair. Fortunately all my data is backed up . So, I've bought a new western digital 160gb eide internal hard drive. I removed my old hard drives and connected the new one into the machine.

After inserting the fedora 8 installation dvd, the computer boots up fine and goes through the regular steps of selecting language etc. But on the partition end, it fails to detect my new hard drive. So, I thought that obviously I need to format the new hard drive so it can be detected.

But I am completely oblivious as to how to do that. Could someone please help me with this?

Thanks,
bharat211

GParted Live CD can be used to format your drive. You download it, put it on a CD and boot from it like you would a linux distribution. See if it detects your hard drive. If it does then you can format your hard drive for installation.

I have a sneaky suspicion that the lack of detection is a hardware problem though.

Hi s.v.g.,

I believe I've resolved my issue. I checked my jumper settings on my hard drive, which were incorrect (was using master with slave where no slave was present) and removed the jumper from the hard drive and the drive is now detected.

Thanks for the help though,
